For more than 18 years, our school has provided award-winning dance training to the Phoenix metro community. What began as Tempe Dance West in 2007—recognized as the 2017 Cox Small Business Award Winner—has now evolved into Arizona’s newest state-of-the-art cultural venue: South Mountain Performing Arts.

Under the artistic direction of founder and owner Michael J. Cook, SMPA continues its tradition of excellence while embracing an exciting new chapter in a cutting-edge dance center at the heart of growing Laveen.

Our 9,500-square-foot facility features a Studio Theater, three additional theater-scale studios, and inviting amenities like dressing rooms, and a student lounge—designed to support both serious training and a welcoming community atmosphere.

With one of Arizona’s most experienced and accomplished teaching faculties, SMPA offers a specialized curriculum that develops, challenges, and inspires dancers at every level—from recreational beginners to pre-professional artists preparing for the stage.
